Mami Wata is considered the divine mother in many African spiritual traditions and refers to a pantheon of water deities.  The ancient Egyptian and Ethiopian word mama means “truth, wisdom” and “uat-ur” meaning “ocean water.”    Often depicted as a seductive love goddess or sensual shapeshifter, who can take the form of a mermaid, snake priestess, or human woman.  We see her with snakes coiled around her body in many representations.
